Which is more important, activity quality or quantity?

English Answer Professional Advisor Perspective

Quality is absolutely more important than quantity, but their relationship isn't an either-or choice; it's "with quality as the core, quantity serves quality." When admissions officers review activity lists, they focus most on: First, depth—how much time you've invested in an activity and what growth stage you've reached; second, impact—what specific changes or outcomes your participation brought; third, role evolution—growth trajectory from participant to contributor to leader; fourth, thematic coherence—whether there are logical connections between activities, supporting a unified personal narrative.

A student with 2-3 deep activities, each showing continuity, growth, and impact, is far more competitive than a student with 10 superficial activities. But this doesn't mean quantity is completely unimportant—appropriate breadth can demonstrate exploratory spirit and diversity, provided depth isn't sacrificed.

The best strategy is: choose 2-3 core activities for deep investment (lasting 2-3 years, with leadership roles and significant achievements), supplemented by 2-3 moderately invested supportive activities, and possibly 1-2 short-term exploratory activities. Such a combination has both depth highlights and appropriate breadth, and also shows good time management skills.
