Which is more important, essays or activity list?
Both are important, but they serve different purposes. The activity list addresses "what you did," while essays address "what kind of person you became through these experiences." The activity list is like a skeleton, supporting the basic outline of the application; essays are like flesh and blood, giving this outline life and depth. Admissions officers typically first look at the activity list to judge your areas of involvement and achievement level, then use the essays to understand the motivations, growth, and reflections behind these activities.
For example, two students might both have experience as student council president, and their activity lists might look similar. But through essays, one might show how leadership was tempered in adversity, while the other might show how they drove campus change through their leadership position. The former gives the experience emotional warmth; the latter gives it social meaning.
Therefore, you can't simply say which is more important. If the activity list is weak, even strong essays can seem like castles in the air; if the activity list is strong but essays are weak, it might seem like you just "did" a lot without "thinking" deeply about it. The ideal state is that the activity list provides a solid foundation of material, and essays build personal narrative and intellectual depth upon this material.
